Synology NAS Server
Neat little box that can be connected to your office network, and takes two standard hard drives. All network users can access it via a variety of standard methods including network mapped drive letter. Additionally can be used as a Time Machinetm backup location for Macs.
It can be set to automatically power on and off and whatever time of day, eco friendly and cheaper to run.
Hard disks can be set to spin down after a short time when not being used to reduce power consumption.
It can remotely backup to Amazon S3 file service (http://aws.amazon.com/s3) at very low cost, currently about 10p per GB per month on a customisable schedule, fully automated.
Can be accessed via the web, so files always available even when not in the office. Also via FTP.
You can configure as many users as you like on the box and allow them read only or write access to whichever folders you require.
It offers USB printer file server functionality and local backup to USB hard drive if required.
Want one? Get in touch, we can supply and configure for you very quickly. |

Tyres2u.co.uk based in Yeovil - brilliant!
This is a bit unusual but I've recently used this company to get tyres for my car and really had a great service, so thought I'd mention them. Set up by Paul Furlong, they come to your home/office and replace the tyres at your convenience. The prices are very good, I couldn't find better on the net and the knowledge and friendly manner makes this chore a whole lot easier. Give them a try:

I'd recommend you call and explain what you're after and get his advice on what suits your car or motorbike.

Outlook 2GB space limit
I've had to help someone recently who hit a hard limit in Outlook that then prevented them opening their mailbox. The fix was nasty and involved losing a chunk of mail but it is the only way to get any of it back. Here's the key stuff to know:
If you are running any version of Outlook before Outlook 2003 you are vulnerable to this.
Once you hit 2GB mailbox (strictly, the outlook.pst file that stores all your mail) then you'll be in big trouble.
Running a later version is safer but still has limits on the size the file can grow to, however it will warn you and not lock you out of your mail.
This doesn't apply if you're using Exchange for your mail, unless you download from it using POP3.
Best way to avoid this? Learn what the delete key does and start using it... |

Network Camera Install
| I've recently installed a Panasonic outdoor camera for a customer, and am pleased with the result. The camera has motion controls, supports timed photos and allows automatic uploads to web and ftp site, allowing interest websites to be created and ultimately to provide time-lapse movies of whatever the camera sees, in this instance a new building going up. If you're interested in seeing the end result, have a look at the website: Hendford Care Home |

Before buying technology - ask us first!
Several customers have recently bought new equipment without consulting with me first - the cheek . OK, I understand that on very rare occasions you may decide to go elsewhere for your purchases but please, just a quick phone call to me first to discuss it may save you a lot of pain/expense in the future. Two situations come to mind, both involving photocopiers. One customer needed to print to their copier but only after buying it discovered that the USB only connection on it doesn't work over long distances, and alternative ways to work round this are costly/clunky. The other purchased a copier in difficult financial circumstances (new start up) but I'm convinced I could have got them a better deal if they had asked me first and would have sourced it through using a local company.
